The “Genuine Oil™” stock finish by Birchwood Casey is a blend of linseed and natural oils, formulated to give a hand-rubbed, traditional oil finish to gun stocks.
It advertises itself as “fast-drying” and claims it will not cloud, yellow, or crack with age.
Application is supposed to be easy and even; it can fill wood grain when used in wet-sanding techniques.
The finish is often a satin (not glossy) unless further polished.
Gives a classic, natural look (wood feels and appearance remain “alive,” not plastic or lacquered).
Easier to repair/refresh than thick varnish or lacquer finishes.
Because it’s oil based, you can reapply layers or touch up small damaged areas without stripping everything.
Doesn’t tend to yellow or crack with age (as per manufacturer’s claims).
Strip old finish thoroughly (if re-finishing).
Sand progressively: e.g. 220 → 320 → 400 grit (or finer).
Clean surface, remove dust.
Apply thin coats (cloth, pad, or brush).
Let the oil penetrate; wipe off excess.
You can “wet sand” between coats (i.e. lightly sand with very fine grit while still moist) to help the finish build and penetrate grain.
Let each coat dry fully before next.
Once a few coats are built, you can buff with fine compounds or polishing cloths to bring out more sheen.
If you ding or nick the stock, you can touch up by reapplying oil in that spot and blending.
Periodic re-oiling may help in harsh environments.
Avoid harsh solvents or cleaners that strip oils.
