Originally introduced in 1976 as the Model 92, evolving through the 92S (added slide-mounted safety/decocker) and 92SB (ambidextrous controls, firing-pin block) .
The 92F, released in 1984, featured interchangeable parts, a squared trigger guard, chrome-lined barrel, and Bruniton finish—winning the U.S. military’s XM9 trials in 1984–86.
Following slide failures under over-pressured ammo, Beretta added a larger hammer pin to prevent slide separation—creating the 92FS in 1989.
Operating system: Short-recoil, open-slide, delayed locking-block—excellent reliability and reduced stovepipes .
Action: Double-action/single-action (DA/SA) with ambidextrous safety-decocker and reversible magazine release .
Barrel & Accuracy: 5″ (125 mm) barrel, military-grade accuracy (10 shots ≤ 3″ at 50 m) .
Capacity: Standard 15+1 rounds; extended mags available.
Material options: Aluminum frame or full stainless Inox; U.S.–made models use straight dust cover, while Italian ones often have slanted, but varies.
